The Manila Philharmonic Orchestra led by our condcutor and founder, Rodel Colmenar, presented our first major concert for the year at the CCP Main Theater performing three uplifting virtuosic works: Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Festive Overture, opus 96”, Nicolo Paganini’s “Violin Concerto No. 2 opus 7” with the most internationally acclaimed Romanian Violinist Alexandru Tomescu as soloist, and Peter Tchaikovsky’s “Symphony No. 5 in E minor, opus 64”.
"Tomescu’s heavenly beautiful tones accompanied by plucked stings brought us to heaven’s door. But it was in the finale Rondo movement with the bells recurring at the beginning of every return of the brilliant gypsy theme that we were really brought in ecstasy to high heavens with Tomescu’s hand gliding smoothly and effortlessly from one end to the other end of his violin, his fingers virtuosically and breathlessly performing the melody and accompaniment. Spontaneous unending ovation again, the young violinist gave 3 encores with the audience endlessly crying “More! More! More!”
"A very beautiful performance which should be repeated in other venues, especially in the provinces and in schools so our young millennials will be inspiringly uplifted the beauty of the “Sounds of Masters”. I watched the members of the orchestra as they performed so confidently, their bows in the same angle, so well-trained thanks to Rodel Colmenar whose loving care and guidance inspire the very talented young members of the MPO. While the audience this evening knew it is forbidden to clap between movements, they couldn’t help but gave spontaneous and happy applause at the end of each movement because of the beautiful uplifting performance of the MPO."
